What Haiku Weather does
Haiku Weather (the website at haikuweather.net and the Haiku Weather app) looks up the current weather for a place and turns it into a short haiku using an AI language model.
Information we handle
- Your location. If you allow it, your device's location is used to find your nearest place name and its weather. If you decline, we estimate a rough city from your IP address instead. You can also type a place and ignore location entirely.
- Places you search for. Text you type into the location box is sent to a search service so we can suggest places.
- Weather details and recent haiku. To write a haiku, we send the place name, the current weather, and up to four of the haiku you recently saw for that place, so it can avoid repeating itself.
- Your IP address. Like any website, our server sees it. We use it to limit abuse (rate limiting) and, when you decline location, to estimate a city.
- Haiku you choose to share. The Share button saves the haiku, place name and time on our server so the link can be opened. Anyone with the link can see it.
Who receives it
We use these services to provide the app. Each receives only what it needs:
| Service | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open-Meteo | Coordinates of the place (sent from your device, so it also sees your IP address) | Weather data |
| Geoapify | Text you type into the location box; coordinates for reverse lookup | Place search and naming |
| OpenStreetMap Nominatim | Coordinates (from your device), only if Geoapify is unavailable | Backup place naming |
| ip-api.com | Your IP address, only if you decline location. This request is sent unencrypted (HTTP). | Estimate a nearby city |
| Groq | Place name, weather details and recent haiku (not your IP address) | Writes the haiku using an AI model |
| Google Fonts | Your IP address, when the page loads its typefaces | Fonts |
| Our hosting provider | Standard web server records, such as IP address and time of request | Hosting the site |
These providers have their own privacy policies and we do not control them.
What we do not do
- No accounts or sign-in, so we hold no profile of you.
- No advertising and no advertising or analytics trackers.
- We do not sell or rent your information.
Stored on your device
The app keeps small items in your browser or app storage: recent haiku for places you viewed, a short list of recent haiku used to avoid repetition, and a temporary session identifier. This stays on your device and you can clear it from your browser or app settings.
How long we keep things
- Generated haiku are kept briefly (about ten minutes is the normal reuse window) under a place key made from coordinates rounded to roughly 100 metres. They are not linked to you, and the store is cleared periodically.
- Rate-limit records (which include an IP address and timestamps) are short-lived and cleared periodically.
- Shared haiku are removed on a rolling basis after about 30 days.
- Web server records are kept by our hosting provider under its own policy.
Your choices
- Decline location permission, or turn it off in your device settings. The app still works if you type a place.
- Clear stored data in your browser or app settings at any time.
- To ask about, or request removal of, a shared haiku, contact us with its link.
Children
Haiku Weather is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the date above. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
